Institute’s sections and staff
Presently the Institute is organised as one unit with two internally organised academic sections and one support section, namely:
- Marine Biology and Resources Management (MBRM)
- Physical and Environmenltal Marine Sciences (PEMS)
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT): It is a cross cutting section responsible for all ICT and outreach activities. The following are housed under the section: the National Oceanographic Data Centre (TzNODC), the Marine Education Extension Development Unit (MEED) and Decision Support Tools unit.
The first two sections are planned to develop later into academic departments. These are:
About MBRM
About Marine Biology and Resources Management Section
The Section of Marine Biology and Resources Management (MBRM), is one of the two Sections of the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS). The other Section is Physical and Environmental Marine Sciences (PEMS). It focuses on issues related to biological oceanography, ocean productivity, fisheries, marine botany and marine mammals, coastal and marine resources (estuaries and mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs, socio-economic and resource management.
Activities
The Section of MBRM follows similar aims and objectives of the Institute of Marine Sciences, which are:
- To undertake research in all aspects of Marine Biological Sciences;
- To provide postgraduate studies in Marine Biology and Resources Management; and
- To provide advisory and consultancy services in Marine Affairs, related to living resources.
The Staff is available for Theses supervision at MSc. and Ph.D. level in a wide range of topics in Marine Biology and Resources Management.
More information about research, collaborations, infrastructure, equipment, etc. is available on the institure’s website: www.ims.udsm.ac.tz

About Physical and Environmental Marine Sciences
The Section of Physical and Environmental Marine Sciences has two subsections namely, Physical and Chemical Sciences. Research themes under chemical subsection include pollution, natural products and ocean – land - atmosphere interactions, while the physical sub-section combines physical oceanography, marine geology, geophysics and marine technology.
The Section offers postgraduate courses contributing to our MSc programme by course work and dissertation. More information about research, collaborations, infrastructure, equipment, etc. is available on the Institute’s website: www.ims.udsm.ac.tz
Activities
The Section follows similar aims and objectives of the Institute of Marine Sciences, which are:
(a) To undertake research in all aspects of Physical and Applied Marine Sciences;
(b) To provide postgraduate studies in Physical and Applied Marine Sciences; and
((c) To provide advisory and consultancy services in Marine Affairs, related to aspects of hydrodynamics, pollution and solid waste management;
The staff are available for supervision of MSc. and Ph.D Theses in aspects of Physical, Chemical and Environmental Marine Sciences.
